Nicaragua SHG EP UCA SJRC - Ecotact

Nicaragua

Description

Nestled in the rugged highlands of Madriz, the San Juan del Río Coco area is known for its fertile volcanic soils, reliable rainfall, and cool mountain climate—ideal conditions for cultivating high-quality Arabica. Farms in this region sit between 1,200 and 1,400 meters, where the slower cherry maturation produces dense beans with balanced sweetness and a clean cup profile. The surrounding Río Coco River sustains agriculture and supports local ecosystems, shaping the region’s distinctive, bright, and earthy flavor characteristics.

This lot comes from UCA San Juan del Río Coco (UCA SJRC), a cooperative founded in 1993 that unites over 370 smallholder farmers across five communities. Many producers manage family-owned plots of 2–3 hectares and rely on traditional cultivation methods passed down through generations. UCA SJRC provides its members with training, technical support, and access to export markets, promoting traceability and quality consistency while strengthening rural livelihoods.

Processing & Grading

This coffee is graded SHG EP (Strictly High Grown, European Preparation).

SHG designates that the coffee was cultivated above 1,200 meters, where cooler temperatures slow cherry maturation and enhance sweetness, clarity, and acidity.

EP indicates that the coffee was carefully hand-sorted to remove defects and ensure uniform bean size for a clean, consistent cup.

Following harvest, cherries are washed processed, a method that enhances brightness and structure while maintaining the balance and sweetness typical of Nicaraguan coffees.

Cup Profile

This conventional UCA San Juan del Río Coco lot offers a classic expression of Nicaragua’s northern highlands, featuring an earthy, nutty base complemented by vibrant lemon and lime acidity. The result is a smooth, structured cup with a clean finish—ideal for roasters seeking a balanced, versatile Nicaraguan profile.
