Indonesia Sumatra GR1 TP Mas Kawi

Indonesia

Description

This coffee hails from the island of Sumatra, one of Indonesia’s most iconic coffee regions, known for its volcanic soil, lush rainforests, and humid climate. The island’s unique microclimates encourage slow cherry development, producing coffees with distinctive earthy depth and layered complexity. Coffee is a cornerstone crop in the region, providing income for thousands of smallholder farmers across remote villages.

Produced by smallholder farmers cultivating coffee on 1–2 hectare plots, this lot represents a long tradition of community-driven agriculture. Farmers often hand-pulp and ferment cherries locally using methods passed down through generations. Many invest in shade-tree planting and soil stewardship to maintain productivity and protect their surrounding ecosystems.

This lot is processed at PT Mas Kawi Wijoyo, a respected mill working directly with farmers to ensure traceability and consistent quality. It is classified as GR1 TP (Grade 1, Triple Picked)—a designation for coffees that undergo three meticulous rounds of hand-sorting to remove defects and ensure only the most uniform beans are exported.

Processing follows the traditional wet-hulling (Giling Basah) method, where parchment is hulled at a higher moisture level than fully washed coffees. This technique, combined with Sumatra’s humid climate, imparts the region’s hallmark flavor profile and dense body.

Expect a smooth, full-bodied cup with layered notes of black tea, brown spice, and earthy depth, supported by a clean structure and long, lingering finish. A classic example of Sumatra’s complexity and character.
