Description

Huehuetenango, in western Guatemala, is one of the country’s most renowned coffee-growing
regions. Its high elevations ranging from 1,100 to 1,900 meters, dry hot winds from Mexico’s
Tehuantepec plains, and mineral-rich soils create unique microclimates that allow coffee to thrive even
at extreme heights. These conditions produce coffees with vibrant acidity, complex fruit notes, and
excellent sweetness. Coffee farming has long been a cornerstone of the region’s economy, helping
sustain communities in its rugged and remote highlands.
This lot comes from AAPICUC, an association of coffee growers in Unión Cantinil founded in 2011 by
43 producers. The group’s mission has always been to provide opportunities for families in
underserved rural areas, improving livelihoods through coffee production. In 2019, AAPICUC achieved
organic certification, followed by Fairtrade certification in 2020, both milestones that underscore its
commitment to sustainability, fair trade, and community development. These certifications not only
strengthen market opportunities for members but also highlight the association’s focus on
environmental stewardship and social responsibility.
This lot is classified as SHB (Strictly Hard Bean), meaning it is grown above 1,300 meters where
cooler temperatures slow cherry maturation and result in denser, higher-quality beans. It is prepared
to EP (European Prep) standards, undergoing meticulous sorting for size and defects to ensure
uniformity and consistency. Washed processing further enhances clarity and structure in the cup.
Together, these factors highlight Huehuetenango’s reputation for producing coffees with remarkable
balance and distinction.
