Yirgacheffe, located in the Gedeb Zone of Southern Ethiopia, is one of the most celebrated coffee regions in the world, known for its vibrant acidity, floral aromatics, and complex fruit notes. The high elevation (1,900 – 2,100 masl), rich volcanic soils, and ample rainfall create an ideal terroir for coffee cultivation. Smallholder farmers in this region typically work plots averaging less than one hectare, using traditional, low-intervention farming methods passed down through generations.
The Aricha Washing Station, also known locally as Adorsi, processes cherries from nearly 800 smallholder farmers in surrounding kebeles such as Aricha, Reko, and Idido. Originally established years ago and revitalized in 2018 by Testi Coffee, the station has become a leader in quality-focused production. Farmers delivering cherries to Aricha benefit from training on selective harvesting and quality control, as well as access to transparent payment systems and quality premiums. Beyond coffee, the station invests in community development projects such as school improvements and access to electricity, reinforcing its role as both a processing hub and a driver of local development.
Only ripe, red cherries are accepted at Aricha. They are depulped the same day of delivery and fermented under water for 36–48 hours depending on weather conditions. After fermentation, the parchment is washed and carefully graded in washing channels. The coffee is then dried on raised African-style beds for 12–15 days, with regular turning to ensure even drying. This careful, traditional washed process results in a clean, expressive cup with the hallmark brightness and floral character Yirgacheffe is known for.
Ethiopian Grade 2 designates high-quality washed coffees with exceptional cleanliness and distinct flavor clarity. Coffees are meticulously sorted by hand and machine to remove physical defects, ensuring a consistent and refined final product.
