Costa Rica SHB EP Fancy Don Claudio - Ecotact

Costa Rica

Description

This coffee is sourced from the Tarrazú region of southern Costa Rica, an area characterized by steep terrain, fertile volcanic soil, and abundant rivers that create ideal conditions for specialty coffee production. Farms in this region are typically located at 1,400 to 1,900 meters above sea level, where cooler mountain climates slow cherry maturation and develop greater flavor complexity, vibrant acidity, and a clean, sweet finish. Tarrazú’s rich biodiversity and pristine natural environment contribute to its unique coffee profile, making it one of Costa Rica’s most renowned and celebrated growing regions.

This lot is produced by CoopeTarrazú, a cooperative founded in 1960 and based in the town of San Marcos de Tarrazú, the heart of Costa Rica’s premier coffee district. The cooperative represents thousands of small-scale producers across the Tarrazú Valley, providing members with agronomic training, access to processing facilities, and fair market pricing. Beyond coffee production, CoopeTarrazú invests heavily in social and environmental initiatives, including reforestation programs, youth education, and community infrastructure. This focus on sustainability and producer empowerment has helped Tarrazú maintain its reputation for both quality and integrity on the global stage.

This lot is graded SHB (Strictly Hard Bean), meaning it was grown at elevations above 1,300 meters, where slower cherry maturation enhances sweetness, acidity, and overall cup quality. It also meets EP (European Preparation) standards, which require beans to be screen size 15+ and meticulously sorted to remove defects, ensuring a clean and uniform cup. As a Fancy selection, this lot represents some of the most carefully curated coffees from CoopeTarrazú, offering a bright, high-toned acidity, medium body, and layered flavors of brown spice, brown sugar, and stone fruit.
